The course covers different types of Epilepsy and Seizures and the medication using Buccal Midazolam. It also covers the side effects, effects, dose, record keeping and after treatment care.

Buccal Midazolam is an alternative treatment to rectal diazepam and works as a relaxant to assist in controlling certain types of seizures.

This Epilepsy Awareness and Administration of Buccal Midazolam course. The is a 3-hour course, and certificates last 2 years as per recommendation by the Joint Epilepsy Council. The course covers different types of Epilepsy and Seizures and the medication using Buccal Midazolam. It also covers the side effects, effects, dose, record keeping and after treatment care.

 

Buccal Midazolam is an alternative treatment to rectal diazepam and works as a relaxant to assist in controlling certain types of seizures. 

The Joint Epilepsy Council’s (JEC) guide on training standards for the administration of Buccal Midazolam state: 

During the course, we will supervise the participant in a simulated procedure using a volunteer with water as the medication. Certificates of attendance should be issued when we are fully satisfied that learning has taken place. 

We will deliver theoretical and practical training through simulation and demonstration. 

 

At the end of the course the attendees will:-

Have an understanding of epilepsy and its management

Understand the importance of care planning and risk assessment to ensure a safe environment and optimum treatment

Be able to recognize seizures and take appropriate first aid actions

Recognize the emergency situation and take appropriate actions

Understand the theory and practice of administering buccal midazolam

Have the knowledge to administer buccal midazolam safely in accordance with the individual care plan

Receive a certificate of attendance valid for two years
